Two Types of Periodical Databases

Each database offers its own unique content.
Which one you use depends upon your topic.

1. General Periodical Databases

• Is your topic general or cross-disciplinary?
• Is your topic currently in the news?
• Are you not sure where your topic might fit?

If so, start with one of the general databases. These cover a wide range of subjects and often include articles from different kinds of periodicals. This is often a good place to begin research. Examples of general databases and the kinds of articles they identify are:

ProQuest Central

Provides access to full-text journals covering a broad range of subject areas, including business, education, literature, political science, and psychology.

Wilson Omnifile

Includes articles from scholarly journals and magazines on many topics, from 1994 to present. All are full text.

ProQuest Newspapers

Includes full text articles from major U.S. newspapers.
